Penalties Associated with Embezzlement

Embezzlement occurs when a defendant steals property that they were given to manage. It can be common amongst bank tellers, employees within a company, or family members caring for their relative's property. Embezzlement is different than simply stealing because of the defendant's unique position of trust over the money or property. Washington imposes penalties for embezzlement according to the value and property that was stolen.

The following classifications are used for embezzlement charges:

  • Money or property worth more than $5,000 - Can be charged with fines up to $20,000, up to 10 years in prison, or both
  • Property worth more than $750, but not more than $5,000 - Can be charged with fines up to $10,000, up to 5 years in prison, or both
  • Property worth less than $750 - Can be charged with fines up to $5,000, up to 1 year in jail, or both

Embezzlement accusations can affect your career and a conviction can damage your record. Based on the severity of your offense, you could be charged with a felony or a federal offense. Attorney Wells is equipped to handle embezzlement charges and will dedicate himself to your case regardless of what you're facing or how long it takes.
