Upon graduating from the California Western School of Law, Steve established a criminal defense practice in Nashville, Tennessee. After practicing in Tennessee for a number of years, he fulfilled his aspiration of serving as a criminal defense attorney in Alaska.

In 2004, Steve joined the Office of Public Advocacy, dedicating himself to traveling throughout Alaska to defend clients facing various criminal charges.
